Group violence |
|
| |
Group violence of any kind can quickly lead to extensive property damage, riot and even deaths. Therefore, it is critical that police respond effectively to displays of public violence and disorder. |

Unplanned , unorganized public violence |
|
| |
Unplanned and unorganized public violence, often witnessed at the end of an event, or at a public place frequented by younger people and alcohol is when violence erupts from an unscripted altercation. |
|
| |
While police can quickly find themselves outnumbered and an opposing force quickly mobilizing into an organized mob, time and circumstance usually permits for rapid action before such situations become out of hand. |
|
| |
There are six core objectives that police facing a disorganized mob attending the scene of unplanned violence: |
|
| |
(i) Immediately call for backup resources and emergency medical response; |
|
| |
(ii) If the injured can be moved, look for a secure protected position where they can quickly be taken and ensure medical response staff attend that location; |
|
| |
(iii) Identify by observation the people who appear to be the leaders and main instigators of violence on both sides. This is critical when reinforcements arrive as immediately arresting the leaders and instigators will cause a mobilizing mob to lose its momentum and make dispersion easier. |
|
| |
(iv) if the opportunity to arrest a person inflicting violence without personal jeopardy, seize the opportunity, otherwise wait for reinforcements. |
|
| |
(v) upon receiving reinforcements, use any intelligence gathered to immediate arrest and detain leaders and instigators. |
|
| |
(vi) set up resources at key exit points from the location as a display of force and ensure no further aggression. |
